About Għarb
The word "Għarb" is derived from an Arabic word which means sunset
This symbolises the position of l-Għarb which is at the west of the island of Gozo. In Arabic the word "l-Għarb" is written as "herb". The motto of the village is "In extremo vigilat" which means "Sentinel at the borderline". L-Għarb means West and this typical old Gozitan village unsurprisingly lies in the West of the Island. It started life as a small hamlet centuries ago. You can see its ancient roots in the centre of the village where some houses have fine examples of decorated stone balconies.
