The Council
|
|
The Gharb Local Council is made up of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, three Councillors and the Executive Secretary. The first election of the Gharb Local Council was held up on the 16th April 1994. Mr Dimitrius Agius, Mr Alfred Cauchi, Mr Maurice Cauchi, Mr Mario Saliba and Mr Louis Apap were elected as the first five Councillors. Mr Louis Apap was elected as the first Mayor of Gharb on the 13th May 1994. On the 3rd May 1995, Mr Louis Apap resigned from Mayor and Mr Maurice Cauchi was elected Mayor. On the last year of the first Council legislation Mr Maurice Cauchi resigned and on the 6th May 1996 Mr Alfred Cauchi was elected Mayor. The acting secretary Ms Anna Maria Vella resigned from her post after only a few months and consequently Ms Joanne Attard filled in the vacant post of Executive Secretary to the Gharb Local Council. |

On the 8th March 1997 the elections for the second legislation were held. The councillors elected were Mr Dimitrius Agius, Mr Alfred Cauchi, Mr Tonio Mifsud, Mr David Apap Agius and Mr Tony Frendo. Mr Alfred Cauchi was elected as Mayor on the 5th May 1997. Consequently Mr Dimitrius Agius resigned and his place was filled by Ms Elsie Caruana which after just a few days also resigned. A vote of non-confidence for the Mayor was presented on the 11th July. On the 15th July Mr David Apap Agius was elected as Mayor. Mr Edward John Depasquale was co- opted as councillor to fill in the place left by Ms Elsie Caruana. On April 1998 Ms Emily Depasquale was employed as Part-time clerk and is in her present post to this day. |

On the 12th March 2000 the elections for the third legislation were held. The Councillors elected were Mr David Apap Agius, Mr Louis Apap, Ms Elsie Caruana, Mr Tonio Mifsud and Ms Carmen Vella. In March 2002 the Ministry for Justice and Local Councils declared the post occupied by Ms Elsie Caruana as vacant. Later the vacant post was occupied by Mr Eugene Portelli who was co-opted as Councillor. |

On the 8th March 2003, the elections for the fourth legislation were held. The Councillors elected were Mr. David Apap Agius, Mr Dimitrius Agius, Mr Raymond Cassar, Mr Sam Cefai and Mr Eugenio Portelli. During the first Council meeting held on Monday 7th April 2003, Mr David Apap Agius was elected Mayor for the third time and Mr Raymond Cassar was elected Deputy Mayor. |

The election for the fifth legislation was held on the 11th March 2006. The elected candidates were Mr. David Apap Agius Mayor, Mr. Raymond Cassar Deputy Mayor, Mr Dimitrius Agius Councillor, Ms. Carmen Vella Councillor and Ms. Sunta Camilleri Councillor. The first Council meeting was held on the 6th April 2006, where Mr. David Apap Agius and Mr. Raymond Cassar were reconfirmed Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. |
