Last Friday 29th August, the l-Gharb Local Council celebrated Gharb Day 2014. The evening started with a Thanks Giving Mass at the Gharb Parish and Basilica Church followed by an evening at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna. The Mayor together with the Council members and the local NGO's laid wreaths infront of Bishop M. Molina Monument whilst the band played the official Gharb Anthem. The evening continued with musical interventions by Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni, poem reading and participation of local talents both in signing and dancing which was prepared by the Gharb Stage Christophers during the Summer Camp organized with the participation of the l-Gharb Local Council throughout Summer 2014. The Mayor David Apap Agius presented this year's awards to Maria Mizzi for her generosity in particular towards the 'Dar tal-Providenza' and therefore she was given the Award 'Qlub Generuzi', Joseph Farrugia was awarded 'Volontarjat Lokali' for his continuous voluntary work in the locality, Elaine Haber was awarded The Gharb Gozitan Cultural Award for her talent in singing and for the successes achieved and the Gharb Award was presented to Consiglia Azzopardi for the accomplishments gained through lace making both on national and international basis. Towards the end of the evening Mayor David Apap Agius delivered a speech for the occasion and later officially opened the second war shelter which is found in Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna and which was restored as part of the M323 project financed by the EU Rural Development Fund. Afterwards all residents were invited to visit the shelter.
