On Saturday 29th of August the Council celebrated Għarb Day. The activities initiated by a Mass of thanksgiving in the Basilica of Għarb concelebrated by the chapter together with Archpriest Mgr. Joseph Sultana. At the end of the Mass two marble plaques, fixed on each side of the main church door were blessed. One represented the founding of the parish and the other commemorating four personalities of this parish that are Karmela Grima, Frangisk Portelli , Frenċ ta’ L-Għarb and Bishop Emeritus Nikol Ġużeppi Cauchi. One was blessed by Fr. Joseph Tabone and another one by Mons. Achille Cauchi. This was followed by a cultural evening held in the square where music was played by Għaqda Mużikali Viżitazzjoni. Wreaths were placed infront of Bishop Molina monument by Council members, MPs and local organizations. During the evening a new Award - "Personal Achievement Award" was sponsored by John Edwards director of the company "Jetrad" to Lisa Marie Micallef for her efforts and achievements. The evening continued by the reading of a poem written for the occasion by Chev. Joe M. Attard and read by the Youth Ambassador Katrina Grima. Later another presentaion of “Qlub Ġenerużi 2015” was presented to the Xuereb family and Local Voluntary Award given to Carmela Cassar. They were presented by the Minister for Gozo, the Hon Anton Refalo. The Minister delivered his speech for the occasion. The program continued with the participation of children from the drama section of the summer club which was organized by the parish in collaboration with the Local Council where they presented a part of the Musical 'Moses’. Leya Attard a young local talent also sang songs with her beautiful voice. Another award entitled 'The Gharb Gozitan Cultural Award was presented to Andrea Muscat and was followed by a speech for the occasion by Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Dr. Justyne Caruana. During the evening Mayor David Apap Agius announced an initiative taken by the Council where a booklet was published including memories of the Parish Centre "Working at the Parish Centre, 1969 -2009, 40 years" compiled by Fr Joseph Tabone after 40 years of service and was presented to him as a surprise. Gharb Award was awarded to Fr. Michael Cauchi for his pastoral work in the locality, at Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary and in the Diocese of Gozo. Mayor David Apap Agius delivered his speech for the occasion. The evening was closed by cutting of the cake for the occasion followed by a reception for all present.
