Announced the death of Bishop Emeritus Nikol G Cauchi
The Gharb Local Council would like to express its sorrow for the death of Bishop Emeritus Nikol Cauchi and forwards its deepest sympathy to his family. Without doubt all Gharb residents, together with all Gozitans and Maltese are joining us in this sad loss. This news reached us unexpectedly and it means that our Country has lost one of the best personalities coming from Gharb. Bishop Cauchi will be remembered for his hard work, his commitment towards the Catholic Church, towards the poor, the family, towards life and other good qualities for which he will be remembered as a true gentleman. Bishop Cauchi remained Bishop of Gozo for the past 38 years since he retired in 2006. He was born at Gharb in 1929 and was ordained priest in 1952. In 1956 he became Parish Priest of Fontana. He also held the chair of Philosophy and Sociology at the Gozo Seminary, where he also taught Italian. He became auxiliary Bishop to Mgr Giuseppe Pace in 1967 and effectively took over the running of the diocese well before Mgr Pace passed away in 1972 when he formally took over. Mgr Cauchi was respected as a preacher and a communicator and everyone loved him. Bishop Cauchi remained popular even after his retirement through his regular participation in radio programmes where he was also available to answer his listeners questions. He was also a regular contributor to the press, but he had to decrease this in the recent months due to health problems. In his farewell message in January 2006, when he handed the reins of the diocese to Mgr Grech, he promised to keep thinking and praying for everyone until he died. Bishop Mario Grech said he continued to show keen interest in the diocese affairs just days before he was hospitalised even looking forward to his own projects which included to publications of his books. Those who knew him well, will also remember him as an intelligent person, his love for literature, his deep knowledge of Church and his jovial character. Bishop Cauchi was hospitalized at the Gozo General Hospital on the 27th October where after an intensive care he had to be transferred to the Mater Dei Hospital. His condition had improved but it still remained critical. He died early this morning at the age of 81 years. 15/11/2010
