Gharb Day 2006
This year the Gharb Local Council celebrated Gharb Day with two activities which were both held at Gharb main square against the background of the magnificent baroque fa§ade of the Gharb Parish Church.
The first activity entitled Gharb Fest was held on Sunday 27th August. This event took the form of a cultural festival where various singers had the opportunity to exhibit their talents by singing well known songs. One of this year’s attractions was a hair show by popular hair stylists David & Alex of Cut Coiffeur.
The program also included dancing by young children from Anette’s Mystic Dancers. The eve ended with the most awaited concert by popular Maltese singer Ira Losco and her band who made a live performance which lasted for around an hour. Gharb fest was hosted by Gharb Local Council but organised by the Maltese Academy of Performing arts under the direction of Mrs. Grace Borg.
On Tuesday 29th August, Gharb Day was celebrated. The evening started with a mass by H.E. Mons N.J. Cauchi, Bishop, at the Gharb Parish Church. After mass the Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni accompanied the local groups together with the Speaker of the Parliament, Minister for Gozo, Mayor of Gharb, Councillors and the Parish Priest for the laying of the wreaths infront of the monument dedicated to Bishop Molina. This year’s program included a performance by Maltese tenor Aldo Busuttil, presentation of various awards and certificates, performances by the local band Weed and line dancing group and finally singing by popular singer Vittorio Gauci and his brothers.
This year ‘Premju Gharb’ was given to Ms. Theresa Cauchi, a 75 year old ex teacher who was very dedicated to her job and always did her utmost for her students. For long years she has and is still contributing towards the Gharb Catholic Action for which she still is the President. She also taught Catechism in our locality. Theresa has always been available to help in the organising of activities, bazaars and every other help needed towards the locality. Ms. Cauchi was presented the shield by Hon Anton Tabone Speaker of Parliament and a commemorative token was presented by Mayor David Apap.
Premju ‘Qlub Generuzi’ was given to Mrs. Vitorja Portelli. Vitorja who has been a widow for a lot of years has six children. Unfortunately one of her youngest is disabled. Despite her difficulties and problems she did her best to give the best cure and education to her son. Mrs. Portelli received the award from Hon. Dr. Justyne Caruana MP and a commemorative token was presented by Mayor David Apap.
The ‘Gharb Gozitan Cultural Award’ was this year given to the locality’s band ‘Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni’. This year the board decided not to open this award but to award it directly to the locality’s band founded in 2003 by Mayor and second band President David Apap for the successes it achieved in a short time and for the great representation it is doing everyday towards the locality. The award was presented by Mrs. Grace Borg, Director of the The Malta Academy of Performing Arts and was received by Mr. Maurice Cauchi, Archivist of Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni while the commemorative token was presented by Mayor David Apap.
