Another successful edition of Seher il-Punent
During the past weekend, between the 27th and 29th April, the locality of l-Gharb hosted the 6th edition of Seher il-Punent. The activities consisting of an array of entertainment for all the family was held at l-Gharb main square ‘Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna’, which square has recently been paved as part of the square’s restoration project. The activities started on Friday morning with a conference about the OBIMED project which was held at l-Gharb Council. This project is co-financed by the Europen Union under the Italia- Malta programme and aims to promote tourism between Malta and Sicily. After the conference a lunch time concert – A duo for a celebration Violin & Viola Recital I – Giambori Duo (UK/Canada) was held at Gharb Parish Church. This concert formed part of the Gaulitana Festival of Music. The festival was officially opened on Friday evening by Mayor David Apap in the presence of the Minister for Gozo the Honorable Giovanna Debono. Various representatives of twinned towns were also present for the event since they were participating in a project co-funded by the EU with the theme of local traditions and crafts in an EU dimension. Friday’s soiree was characterized by a traditional dinner organized by the locality’s local organizations with the help of a number of volunteers and with the participation of the twinned guests who had the opportunity to experience local volunteering and Maltese traditional cooking. They also filled the event with traditional dancing. During the evening re-enactments were done by Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Organization. The first round of the tug of war competition was also held during the evening. 5 teams from different localities participated in this year’s competition. On Saturday morning cultural walking tours were held around the places of historical and cultural interest. The evening was filled with a spectacle of local talents exhibiting of stage. Amongst the main attractions of Saturday’s spectacle there was a 70s 80s 90s flashback concert by Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni under the direction of Maestro George Apap with the participation of popular singers like Debbie Scerri and Tenor Aldo Busuttil. Another concert was presented live by New Cuori. Seher il-Punent was also chosen to be part of the Malta Tourism Authority’s fireworks international symposium this year and those present could admire a spectacle of air and ground fireworks on Saturday eve. Sunday being the last day of the festival was packed with activities throughout the whole day. In the morning activities were characterized by historical re-enactments, the productions of the largest gbejna and tasting of last year’s. This year’s gbejna weighed 104 kilos i.e. surpassing last year’s with 27 kilos. A motorcycle show and get together was also held in the morning. Activities reached their peak time in the evening where the festival was closed off with the tug of war finals and a show by the cast of popular TV programme Déjà vu. This event was organized by the l-Gharb Local Council with the collaboration of the Ministry for Home and Parliamentary Affairs, the Ministry for Gozo and the Malta Tourism Authority. The Council would like to thank all those who gave their input for the successful outcome of the festival including sponsors, volunteers and the general public who attended numerously for this event. The Council gives appointment for next year’s edition of the festival, which has now become an integral part of the locality’s cultural calendar.
