Seher il-Punent 2009

Last weekend the silent & picturesque locality of Gharb, Gozo has opened its doors to welcome hundreds of visitors for the third edition of Seher il-Punent Festival of Arts, Crafts, Music and Traditions.

This year a four day programme of events was prepared by the hard working Council led by Mayor David Apap. Activities commenced on Thursday 19th March, feast of Saint Joseph with a traditional Gozitan dinner which was prepared by tal-Qiegha Folk Group with the collaboration of Gharb local organizations. The dinner was held under the marquee at Gharb main square. Special mouthwatering dishes were served from grandfather’s carte du jour to please the senses of the special audience who attended numerously for this event.

Activities continued on Friday 20th March, with cultural walking tours and traditional re-enactments such as ‘Il-Qiegha’. Friday’s main events took place in the evening where various local talents exhibited the songs and dances on the main stage. These were followed by a concert by popular Gozitan entertainers Cash & Band. The eve closed off with a spectacular concert by the internationally renowned Italian Singer Aleandro Baldi who gave his first ever concert in Malta. Mr Baldi performed a number of songs from his repertoire including the most popular songs Non Amarmi and Passera.

Seher il-Punent 2009 reached its peak on Saturday the 21st in the evening with a varied spectacle which had as main attractions the winner of the Malta Song For Europe 2009 Chaira and the Group Q. The special guests during the spectacle were Winter Moods who made their grand return to Gozo after a year’s absence and closed off the spectacle with a memorable concert. Both Friday’s and Saturday’s main stage spectacles were hosted by the outgoing Maltese singer & presentor J. Anvil.<.br>
The third edition of Seher il-Punent came to an end on Sunday 22nd with an array of morning events including band marches by Gharb band Ghaqda Muzikali Vizitazzjoni, folk dancing by Sinet folk group and the traditional dance il-Kummittiva together with folk music played by tal-Qiegha folk group. An open market was set up including fresh strawberries and fruits, sweets and typical products.

Popular TV Programme il-Hadd Ghalik presented by Angie Laus was also part of the Seher il-Punent activities and was transmitted live from under the tent at Gharb Square with an audience consisting of both Gozitans and Maltese who came purposely to take part in the programme.

Seher il-Punent 2009 was organized by Gharb Local Council in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and the Parliamentary Secretariat for Public Dialogue and Information within the Office of the Prime Minister. The Gharb Local Council would like to thank all the sponsors of the Festival as well as all the visitors who despite the weather conditions came over to Gharb numerously and made the festival once more a recognized success.

The Gharb Local Council is looking forward to welcome all again during the next year’s edition of Seher il-Punent.
