SEHER IL-PUNENT 2010 The Gharb Local Council has just ended successfully the fourth edition of the Festival of Arts, Music, Culture and Heritage Seher il-Punent held during the long weekend between the 19th and 21st March, 2010. The Festival opened on Friday 19 March, with the re-enactment of the In Guardia at Gharb main square during which the ceremony of the signing of a new twinning between Gharb and Quadrelle an Italian locality in the province of Avellino in the Campania region was also held. After signing the twinning agreement the two Mayors David Apap Mayor of Gharb and Lucia Napolitano Mayor of Quadrelle delivered their message to the citizens of the two localities who were attending the event. The Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono and Parliamentary Secretary for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue Dr. Chris Said also gave a speech during the occasion. Present also for this occasion were MP’s Frederick Azzopardi and Justyne Caruana. This town twinning event was co-financed by the Twinning Program of the European Union. Following the official ceremony a traditional meal organized by local organizations was held at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna and the audience were entertained with tradional song and music by Cini Brothers Band and tal-Qiegha Folk Group. Saturday evening, being the second eve of the festival was animated by popular singer and TV presenter Claudette Pace together with Kav Joe M Attard. The eve was characterized by several local talents who had the opportunity to exhibit their talents on the main stage. The tug of war competition launched during the evening was a good attraction with various teams taking part coming from Gozitan, Maltese and Italian localities. The evening ended up with a live concert by the popular Maltese band Airport Impressions. Sunday 21st March which was the last day of the festival was enriched with an array of continuous activity during the whole day. The highlights of the morning consisted of the live creation of largest Gbejna ever made in the Maltese Islands, a motorcycle show and get together of motorcycle enthusiasts, folk dancing by the Aurora folk group and typical products including wine, Maltese biscuits, Maltese and Italian cheese, and other agricultural products including strawberries. During the afternoon a dancing marathon was held with the participation of over 15 schools of dance from all over Malta and Gozo. During the evening the final of the tug of war game was held, while on stage a spectacular performance was given with the participation of some of the best Maltese artists including Claudette Pace, J Anvil, Georgina, Olivia Lewis with Dominic Galea and his band. The evening ended with the participation of talented singer Thea Garrett with her performance of the winning song at the Malta Euro song 2010 'My Dream' and fireworks. During the days of the Festival re-enactments of “Fuq il-Qiegha” were held as well as guided tours of the historical center and a vineyard at Gharb. Other innovative initiatives related to Seher il-Punent this year was the Gozo sightseeing bus that was being given special prices during the weekend. The Gharb Local Council wishes to thank the volunteers, local organizations, the sponsors and last but not least the general public for having attended this activity numerously and making this festival a repetitive success story. Gharb Local Council gives appointment for the next edition of Seher il-Punent 2011. This activity was held in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo, Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumers, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Dialogue and the Malta Tourism Authority.
