Inauguration of the Restoration Project at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna

On Thursday 21st June, 2012 at 8.00pm, a cultural literary soiree’ was held to commemorate the official inauguration of the Restoration Project at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna. This project was carried out through EU Funds under Measure 323 as part of the project Gharb’s Cultural and Touristic Conservation project which amounts to a total of €636,000.

The square project included the construction of a water culvert and services, changing of the water main, new surface to the square and also new pavements with porfido. A special attraction included a sundial which is also part of the paving. By means of this sundial, one can see the time of the day as indicated by his shadow. The sundial also includes a colored water jet with LED lights. Part of this project also included the restoration of the pilgrimages cross thus helping in the protection of the locality’s cultural heritage. In the near future the Council will also be carrying out the restoration works of a shelter dating back to the war period which is located in the same square.

In his speech for the occasion Mayor David Apap showed his satisfaction for the completion of this project and he added that the Square is now being given back to the residents to enjoy and also being an attraction to the visitors. He also thanked the residents for the inconvenience caused during the period whilst the works were being carried out and also explaining that sometimes works take longer than necessary due to obstacles on which the Council has no control. The Mayor also explained that works are being carried out on other interventions that are part of the project Gharb’s Cultural and Touristic Conservation project co-financed by the EU under the Measure 323. Other interventions which are being carried out include the Restoration of Taz-Zejt Church, San Dimitri Chapel, Sdieri Street Bridge and Construction of Rubble Walls. The Mayor also explained that Church Street is now ready with Tarmac and the Council will now be carrying out the road works project by the laying of tarmac at Trux Street and aiming at extending the said project to another six roads. The Mayor also announced that the Council has received the confirmation approval of another project which is that of an adventure park in the football ground area in Tumas Cassar Street having a total value of €300,000. This park will be the first one of its kind in Gozo.

The works inauguration program at Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna also included a message by Hon. Giovanna Debono Minister for Gozo, interventions by Architect Edward Scerri on the restoration of the Pilgrimages Cross and by Architect Alexei Pace on the Sun Dial, Poem reading by Chev. Joe M. Attard and musical interventions by the Band Brass Delight. During the program the lights at the square were switched off. At the end of the soiree’ the Minister for Gozo together with l-Gharb’s Mayor inaugurated the square by switching on the water jet having as background a light and music show which was created for the occasion.
